BE THE LIGHT
“Travel light. Live Light. Spread the light. Be the Light.”
- Yogi Bhajan
As we walk our journey on this earth, it can be so easy to lose sight of why we are really here. It can be easy to get swept away in the busy-ness of life, the constant demands on our time, and the endless chatter of our ego. It is easy to get lost in to-do lists and to take everything all too seriously. (Personal confession).
For me, this mantra from Yogi Bhajan slows down the spinning universe and reminds me that we are here to live fully, to serve, to love and be loved and to enjoy our lives. It reminds me to breathe. It reminds me that within each of us there is an incredible, infinite spirit and a beautiful beaming light. We are happiest, healthiest, most alive, and most fulfilled when we are aligned with our light; our truest nature. When we can see with our soul eyes and experience life with an open heart, we begin to see that everything is light. In this awareness, problems, insecurities, daily stresses and worries become so small, so insignificant.
Our biggest obstacles seem to dissolve and our deepest dreams and desires become possible. We remember we are supported. We remember we are guided. We remember we are powerful creators. We feel a deeper connection to the world around us, the people around us, and we discover this beautiful reservoir of peace within. And then we get busy, and forget again. This mantra always brings me home.
For many years, I worried about my purpose. What is it that I am supposed to do here with my precious time on this Earth? What course should I take, which career should I pursue, how could I make the biggest contribution? What overwhelming questions! Luckily, I was led to a powerful lecture by spiritual teacher, Gabrielle Bernstein, where she instructed to stop debating about your purpose and just be the light! Her message moved me. Your real purpose is to be the light. How beautiful, how clear. Whatever mantra, spiritual teacher, breathing technique, or yoga practice we subscribe to; all that really matters is that it connects us to our light.
What really is most valuable is that we stay inspired, that we stay in spirit. That is the gift of each of these practices that we do; they bring us back to our spirits, they make our light shine. As our own light grows brighter and brighter, it has an incredible effect on the world around us. In our own shining, we teach others to connect with their light too. The truth is, we each have a unique gift to share with the world, and as Gabrielle would say, “the world needs your light!”
When we live in the light, we make a difference. Peace becomes our priority and we radiate joy, kindness and loving energy. We make an amazing contribution to this planet with our positivity…and best of all; we have a great time doing it!
Live in your light, shine your light, brighten your light, enjoy your light; and you will uplift the world.
